The Willmore energy landscape of spheres
5 octobre 2026 15:30-16:30 -Oratrice ou orateur : Jona Seidel
Résumé :
A geometric energy landscape is usually investigated locally through its critical points and their Morse indices. Understanding its global structure is challenging and requires both analytic and topological approaches. We present a special case where such global analysis is feasible: the Willmore energy of immersed 2-spheres in $\mathbb{R}^3$ . We show that the subset of immersions with energy at most $12\pi$ consists of four path components. As a consequence, we obtain insight into the singular behavior of the Willmore flow and a relation between self-intersections and the Willmore energy beyond the Li-Yau inequality. To prove these results, we glue together different instances of the Willmore flow and devise an invariant for triple-point-free immersed spheres.

Umbilic points on Willmore surfaces
28 septembre 2026 15:30-16:30 -Oratrice ou orateur : Nicolas Marque
Résumé :
The Willmore energy is a classical (almost) conformal invariant measuring the complexity of an immersion. Its critical points are called Willmore surfaces and can be understood as elasticas generalizing minimal surfaces in any of the three conformal models. In this talk, we will angle our study through the tool of the Conformal Gauss Map. This application into a de Sitter space offers a natural link between harmonic surfaces in a Lorentz context and Willmore surfaces, and allows one to turn many non linear aspects of Willmore studies, into Lorentzian linear ones, with one key issues: it breaks down at umbilic points. An approach of these singularities through a Gauss-Bonnet formula will allow us to recover links between the Willmore energy and the Conformal/Renormalized volumes.
Bach-flat metrics and regularity theory of conformal structures
21 septembre 2026 15:30-16:30 -Oratrice ou orateur : Andoni Royo
Résumé :
Bach-flat metrics are a natural generalization of Einstein and self-dual metrics in dimension four and arise as critical points of the Weyl energy.
Such energy is conformally invariant and it is naturally defined for Riemannian metrics of Sobolev class W 2,q with q > 2. In this talk, we will show that Bach- flat metrics of such Sobolev class are indeed smooth up to global conformal diffemorphisms. Furthermore, we will establish regularity properties of metrics whose Bach tensor is controlled in suitable Sobolev spaces, and analogue results in higher dimensions. This is based on joint work with Rodrigo Avalos and Albachiara Cogo.

Taut smoothings and shortest geodesics
18 mai 2026 15:30-16:30 -Oratrice ou orateur : Macarena Arenas
Résumé :
In this talk we will discuss the connection between combinatorial properties of minimally self-intersecting curves on a surface S and the geometric behaviour of geodesics on S when S is endowed with a Riemannian metric. In particular, we will explain the interplay between a smoothing, which is a type of surgery on a curve that resolves a self-intersection, and k-systoles, which are shortest geodesics having at least k self-intersections, and we will present some results that partially elucidate this interplay. There will be lots of pictures. Based on joint work with Max Neumann-Coto.

On the construction of spacetimes with lightlike parallel spinors
23 mars 2026 14:00-15:00 -Oratrice ou orateur : Jonathan Glöckle
Résumé :
A couple of years ago, Ammann, Kröncke and Müller proposed a construction producing initial data sets for spacetimes with lightlike parallel spinor as studied by Baum, Leistner and Lischewski in the context of Lorentzian special holonomy. The input data for the AKM-construction essentially consists of a curve in the moduli space of Ricci-flat metrics on a closed manifold Q together with a parallel spinor for a metric representing its starting point. It remained unclear, however, to which extent all initial data for spacetimes with lightlike parallel spinor can be obtained by this construction for a fixed codimension 2 topology Q. In this talk, based on joint work with Bernd Ammann and Klaus Kröncke, we seek to improve the construction. It turns out that there is mainly only one additional freedom: to prescribe a single geometrically meaningful scalar function.
Tiling billiard in the wind-tree model
23 mars 2026 15:30-16:30 -Oratrice ou orateur : Magali Jay
Résumé :
In this talk, I will present the meeting of different dynamical systems: tiling billiards, the wind-tree model and the Eaton lenses. The three of them are motivated by physics.
In the beginning of the 2000’s, physicists have conceived metamaterials with negative index of refraction. Tilling billiards’ trajectories consist of light rays moving in an arrangement of metamaterials with opposite index of refraction. The wind-tree model was introduced by Paul and Tatyana Ehrenfest to study a gaz: a particle is moving in a plane where obstacles are periodically placed, on which the particle bounces. The Eaton lenses are a periodic array of lenses in the plane, in which we consider a light ray that is reflected each time it crosses a lens.
After having introduced these dynamical systems, I will consider a mix of them: an arrangement of rectangles in the plane, like in the wind-tree model, but made of metamaterials, like for tiling billiards. I study the trajectories of light in this plane. They are refracted each time they cross a rectangle.
Using dynamics on half-translation surfaces and their moduli space, I show that these trajectories are trapped in a strip, for almost every parameter. This behavior is similar to the one of the Eaton lenses.

The geometry of Kerr black holes and the Teukolsky equation.
8 décembre 2025 15:30-16:30 -Oratrice ou orateur : Pascal Millet
Résumé :
An important family of solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations is given by the Kerr metrics, which describe rotating black holes. In this talk, I will present some important geometric properties of these spacetimes relevant to the study of classical field equations such as the scalar waves, electromagnetism and linearized gravity. As observed by Teukolsky, by exploiting a special algebraic property of the spacetime, it is possible to decouple certain components of the fields from the rest of the system, leading to the so-called Teukolsky equation. Solutions of this equation can then be analyzed to recover information about the full system.
