A construction of the sine-Gordon model above 6pi
Catégorie d'évènement : Séminaire Probabilités et Statistique Date/heure : 26 mars 2026 10:45-11:45 Lieu : Salle de conférences Nancy Oratrice ou orateur : Sarah-Jean Meyer (Oxford) Résumé :I will present a construction of the Euclidean sine–Gordon quantum field theory using probabilistic methods. The approach formulates the model through a stochastic control problem and a weak forward–backward stochastic differential equation (FBSDE). The starting point is a detailed study of the perturbation theory associated with the sine–Gordon potential across the full subcritical regime. For a portion of the subcritical regime extending above 6π, the construction can be made rigorous beyond perturbation theory using a stochastic control problem. I will explain the different regimes of the model and why we currently cannot construct the model in the full subcritical regime.
Statistical Learning with Mixture-of-Experts: From Sparse Regularized Estimation in High-Dimensional and Functional Settings to Frugal Distributed Aggregation
Catégorie d'évènement : Séminaire Probabilités et Statistique Date/heure : 26 mars 2026 09:15-10:15 Lieu : Salle de conférences Nancy Oratrice ou orateur : Faïcel Chamroukhi (Caen et Paris Saclay) Résumé :Modern statistical learning problems often involve heterogeneous, high-dimensional, or distributed data, raising two complementary challenges: controlling model complexity in high dimensions, and enabling frugal inference under distributional constraints, while preserving both structure and statistical consistency.
In this talk, I present contributions centered on mixture-of-experts (MoE) models, a flexible latent variable framework with well-established approximation capabilities and learning guarantees for conditional densities.
I first consider MoE models with high-dimensional predictors, including functional data such as curves and time series, and their training via Lasso-type regularization in unsupervised settings, enabling sparse and interpretable representations together with non-asymptotic model selection guarantees.
I then address learning from data distributed across multiple sites due to storage, computational, or governance constraints, and present a frugal aggregation strategy for MoE models based on optimal transport, which constructs a reduced global estimator from locally trained models in a single communication round while preserving both model structure and statistical consistency, making it particularly well suited to large-scale settings where communication is a major bottleneck.
Together, these contributions position MoE as a unified framework for principled, interpretable, and scalable statistical learning, with perspectives on frugal learning of generative models at the interface of modern machine learning and AI, and applications in constrained industrial environments.

The DeGroot and Johnsen-Friedkin models on complex networks
Catégorie d'évènement : Séminaire Probabilités et Statistique Date/heure : 12 mars 2026 10:45-11:45 Lieu : Salle de conférences Nancy Oratrice ou orateur : Mariana Olvera-Cravioto (Univ. North Carolina) Résumé :The DeGroot and the Johnsen-Friedkin model are popular models for opinion formation on directed networks. In both of them, individuals update their opinions at each time-step by taking a weighted average of their neighbors’ opinions, either synchronously or asynchronously. Given a graph, the synchronous DeGroot model can be seen as the power iterations of a stochastic matrix, and provided the weight matrix is irreducible and aperiodic, it is known to converge to consensus, i.e., a common value that all individuals agree on. The Johnsen-Friedkin model allows an additional parameter which can be used to represent random external influences, giving rise to an interactive particle system that converges geometrically fast to a stationary distribution. This talk explains how to analyze the limiting behavior of both models when the underlying social network is assumed to be a locally tree-like random graph (e.g., a configuration model, an inhomogeneous random digraph, or a stochastic block model). This analysis allows us to understand the time to stationarity, as well as characterize the limit, in the DeGroot model, or the stationary distribution, in the Friedkin-Johnsen model, in terms of the statistical properties of the underlying random graph.
Catégorie d'évènement : Séminaire Probabilités et Statistique Date/heure : 12 février 2026 14:00-15:00 Lieu : Salle de conférences Nancy Oratrice ou orateur : Vidhi Vidhi (IECL) Résumé :An Introduction to the Boschloo’s Test
The Boschloo’s test is an exact test for comparing two binomial proportions and is closely related to Fisher’s exact test. By avoiding the conservatism inherent in conditioning on fixed margins, it can offer improved performance in small-sample settings. The test is constructed by using Fisher’s p-value as a test statistic and evaluating it under an unconditional framework. The talk will give a brief overview of the idea behind the test and its relationship to classical exact methods.
Clique packings in random graphs
Catégorie d'évènement : Séminaire Probabilités et Statistique Date/heure : 12 février 2026 10:45-11:45 Lieu : Salle de conférences Nancy Oratrice ou orateur : Leticia Mattos (Heidelberg) Résumé :We consider the question of how many edge-disjoint near-maximal cliques may be found in the dense Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$. Recently Acan and Kahn showed that the largest such family contains only $O(n^2/(\log{n})^3)$ cliques, with high probability, which disproved a conjecture of Alon and Spencer. We prove the corresponding lower bound, $\Omega(n^2/(\log{n})^3)$, by considering a random graph process which sequentially selects and deletes near-maximal cliques. The main tool in our analysis is the so-called Differential Equation Method. This is a joint work with Simon Griffiths.
